Activities in the Donaubergland
The fascination of Danube infiltration
The Danube seepage in the Donaubergland
Danube infiltration is – of course – not new. It has been around for centuries. As early as 1874, the Danube between Immendingen and Möhringen in the Donaubergland region disappeared completely into the ground for the first time in summer. Since then, this spectacle has been repeated several times a year.
What’s special: The Danube flows from the Donaubergland into two oceans – the Schwarez Sea and the North Sea!
However, our project “Fascination Danube seepage” is new. The region has joined forces to make this unique phenomenon more accessible to you. Be inspired to take a trip to the Danube seepage. Because this is more than just the dry river bed near Immendingen.
Other attractive leisure activities in the Donaubergland
In addition to hiking and cycling, there are many other activities, attractions and sights that you can find in the Donaubergland.
Exceptional museums
The Donaubergland region is home to a number of museums of national importance, from the Neuhausen ob Eck open-air museum, Campus Galli near Meßkirch and the museum center in Meßkirch Castle to the German Harmonica Museum and the Auberle House Museum with dinosaurs, Alamanni and many more in Trossingen.
Museums have long since become adventure centers for the whole family. Here you can discover history and experience it up close. There are attractive hands-on activities for young and old in all of these cultural centers in the countryside.
Castles, fortresses and ruins
The southwest Alb with the Danube valley is one of the areas in Germany with the most castles. There were castles and palaces on almost every rock and mountain spur in the Donaubergland in the Middle Ages.
Even today there are still many castles, fortresses and ruins to admire, whether in the Danube valley or on the Heuberg, from Mühlheim Castle to Bronnen Castle, Hausen Castle and Werenwag Castle to the Hohenzollern Castle of Sigmaringen, from Wildenstein Castle to the castle ruins of Kallenberg, Falkenstein, Gutenstein and Dietfurt or Granegg and Konzenberg – and there is much more to discover.
Climbing, skating, gliding
Outdoor exercise, whether at lofty heights, on one of the most modern inline tracks in Europe, mini golfing and archery or as a co-pilot in the sky, there are plenty of things that you can try out as a “beginner” or even as a “pro”.
The Hirsch-Erlebniswald climbing park in Mahlstetten, the ultra-modern Geisingen inline arena with outdoor track, the gliding sites at Germany’s highest gliding airfield on the Klippeneck or at the Leibertingen gliding site on the edge of the Danube valley invite you to enjoy extraordinary vacation experiences – under special conditions this year, of course.
Camping in the Donaubergland
The Donautal campsite is located directly on the Danube in Hausen im Tal. Above in Leibertingen-Talheim, the new camping garden encourages you to stay longer right next to the natural swimming pool.
Various summer campsites can also be used by individuals.
There are motorhome and camper van sites from Geisingen an der Donau via Tuttlingen to Sigmaringen.
Climbing in the Danube valley
The Danube Valley is an Eldorado for climbers. However, it is important to note that only certain rocks are open for climbing. Experienced climbers know this and are familiar with the Danube Valley and its unique climbing routes.
There is hardly any other outdoor activity that gets you this close to nature, but it also means paying attention to the animals and plants on the rock.
The current climbing regulations in the Upper Danube Nature Park set out the rules.
Enjoy the views in the Donaubergland
What makes the Danube valley so special, apart from the narrow and imposing canyon of the Danube, are not least the numerous viewing rocks between Mühlheim an der Donau and Inzigkofen.
Each of these viewpoints offers a completely new perspective of this imposing valley, whether Knopfmacherfelsen, Spaltfelsen, Eichfelsen, Bandfelsen, Lenzenfelsen, Schaufelsen or Rabenfelsen and many more.
Boating in the Danube valley
The Young Danube, which is still close to nature, invites you to enjoy wonderful canoe tours. From Hausen im Tal, you can paddle along the Danube as far as Sigmaringen and observe the unique flora and fauna up close.
However, it should be noted that boating on the Danube is also subject to strict rules to protect nature. You are not allowed to sail on the Danube without a permit and pass. These can be booked at the Haus der Natur in Beuron or from the official boat rental companies in the Danube valley.
e-Bike Center Donautal
Nowadays, almost nothing works without a bike, even on vacation. Even if you don’t have an e-bike or haven’t taken your bike with you, there is a bike rental shop in the Danube valley between Beuron and Hausen im Tal.
Not only can you cycle along the Danube cycle path between Tuttlingen and Sigmaringen directly from the rental station, but you can also easily conquer the heights in the mountains along the Danube and get a taste of the mountain air.
Experience regional beer culture
Did you know that the Donaubergland is a beer country with history and tradition, the DonauBierland? There are not only regional beers to taste here in the region, you can also experience the whole beer culture in the visitor world of the Hirsch brewery in Wurmlingen during brewery tours and beer brewing.
There are many beer stories to discover, from the Trossingen wooden bottle with beer remains from the Alamanni period to a document from the Middle Ages that proves the cultivation of malting barley in the region and the old beer town of Tuttlingen.
