A medieval monastery town emerges – history experiment

This is unique: a medieval monastery town is being built in a wooded area near Meßkirch in the Donaubergland region – under today’s conditions, but largely using resources from the early Middle Ages.

The famous monastery plan of St. Gallen is the world’s first complete surviving building plan from the Middle Ages. It is kept in the archives of St. Gallen in Switzerland. The plan shows very clearly the idea of building an entire monastery town around a church with all the buildings that were necessary for the everyday life of the monastery’s inhabitants.

Craftsmen and women, who are on site every day and work on the construction site, demonstrate the craft techniques and skills that were needed to build houses, cultivate fields and keep livestock in the early Middle Ages. This is living history brought to life!

The St. Gallen monastery plan

The plan is world-famous. It was probably drawn by monks in the Reichenau monastery on Lake Constance before the year 830 AD.

Time travel to the Middle Ages

What was life like in the Middle Ages? What clothes did our ancestors in the Lake Constance region wear? What tools did they use? And what did the people in one of these early monasteries live on?

At Campus Galli, we try things out and experiment. The employees learn something new with every new project. They pass this knowledge on to visitors in discussions at the construction site and in the workshop. Here you can ask all your questions about the Middle Ages during your visit. Where else can you do this so directly and personally?

You can spend a whole day on Campus Galli. Interesting discoveries await around every corner and behind every tree. You can take a break at the market square in the middle of the campus and eat whatever you like, whether you’re thirsty or hungry.

During guided tours, you can learn even more from the trained staff. During activity days and events, visitors can try things out for themselves and take home what they have made.

What can be seen and experienced at Campus Galli?

Around 20 buildings, huts, workshops, shelters, gardens and pastures give an impression of life in the Middle Ages.
Construction continues every day. Every day, wooden beams are hewn with axes on the site. The sound of the anvil can be heard from the forge. Everything has to be done by hand. Everything is more laborious, slower than today. Time seems to stand still away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. You will feel and experience it during your visit to Campus Galli!
