Artisan brewing with tradition and history
Beer is one of the oldest and most interesting drinks in the world!
Beer is liquid bread – and we need bread to live!
Why is the Donaubergland considered a beer region?
The art of brewing has a long tradition in the DonauBierland! Some of the oldest evidence of beer brewing in the Middle Ages comes from this region:
- The oldest evidence of hopped beer has been found in our region. This was discovered and proven in a wooden bottle.
This was found in the grave of an Alamanni prince near Trossingen in the Donaubergland region.
- The first references to the cultivation of brewing grain, and therefore also to beer production and consumption, date back to the early Middle Ages: In a document from the monastery of St. Gallen from the year 764 for the town of Geisingen on the Danube lists “grain for brewing beer” as a tax for the monastery.
- The up-and-coming working-class town Tuttlingen was a real “beer town” around 1900 with around 40 breweries. In terms of beer production and consumption, it was on a par with the cities in the Ruhr region!

A special experiment
How did the Alamanni, the Germanic tribes in the southwest, brew their beer in the 6th century?
The SWR television has ventured an exciting experiment. In the Hirsch brewery in Wurmlingen near Tuttlingen, the experts brewed beer. The basis was the proven residue from the Trossingen wooden bottle from the 6th century.
This interesting report from the “Planet Schule” series explores the question of the Alamanni’s diet.
(The experiment of brewing and tasting an “Alemannic beer” is documented from around minute 10.30 in the film).
