Danube Valley – The Swabian Grand Canyon
What prospects
It is an uplifting sight every time you stand on one of the viewing cliffs in the Danube valley. You look down into the imposing valley of the Danube. The feeling is uplifting when you look down into the rugged valley with its white-grey shimmering mighty rock faces. You stand there almost in disbelief, marveling at the small river winding its way around the rocks. You recognize the Danube cycle path and the railroad line of the Danube Valley Railway, which looks like a toy train. This sight leaves no one unmoved.
Change your perspective
And from each of the numerous vantage points, you always have a completely different perspective. It looks different in every season. Every weather and every daylight creates its own atmosphere. You have to experience the Danube Valley at any time of year.
The Danube
The tranquil little river is ultimately the sparse remnant of the primeval sea and the primeval Danube, which have left their impressive traces in this landscape. Millions of years ago, huge masses of water washed out the valley in this karst mountain range of the Swabian Alb. Weathering has also polished and eroded stones. This has left us with a landscape with very special climatic conditions.
Rare animals and plants
If you’re lucky, you might even see chamois or rare birds, especially in winter when the trees are bare of leaves. However, you should keep very quiet and observe the animals in silence.
Here, in the middle of the Upper Danube Nature Park, live rare plants and animals that can only be found in a few areas of Germany.
The diversity of habitats has enabled some species to re-establish themselves here.
