The famous lyre from Trossingen

It was a unique find, discovered in the grave of an Alamannic prince from the Merovingian period (around 560 AD) near Trossingen in the Donaubergland. The experts were thrilled by the spectacular grave goods: an almost completely preserved, 80 cm tall wooden lyre from the early Middle Ages. Only the strings, which were probably made of horsehair or gut, and the tailpiece are missing. The rich, all-over decorations are particularly striking.

The lyre was part of a rich find in so-called grave 58 near Trossingen. Due to the damp soil climate, the wooden objects were very well preserved. More about the Merovingian cemetery and the grave 58.

The original lyre can be found in the State Archaeological Museum in Constance. A replica, a replica and the story behind it are also on display in the Auberlehaus Museum in Trossingen.
