Excavations in Trossingen
Dinosaur sites from the Mesozoic uncovered
Did dinosaurs also live here in the Donaubergland? Of course!
A good 200 million years ago, when the primordial sea covered almost everything in the region, dinosaurs were also at home here. Near Trossingen, on the northern slope of the Trosselbach valley, lies the largest dinosaur site from the Mesozoic era. After they became extinct, the remains of the dinosaurs were preserved in the rock strata. Around 100 years ago, a large metatarsal bone of Plateosaurus was found, followed by an entire skeleton. Only a few years ago, extensive excavations uncovered the complete, eight-metre-long skeleton of Plateosaurus – impressive prehistoric animals.
At the excavation site, however, you can only get an insight into the site during special guided tours, but in the Trossingen museum “Auberlehaus” the finds and replicas are shown in a very vivid and exciting way.
Find out how during a visit to the “Auberlehaus” museum.
Here you can not only visit the largest dinosaur exhibition between Zurich and Stuttgart, but also learn a lot about minerals and gemstones, for example.
